1984 January
  • City Polytechnic of Hong Kong (CPHK) is established and temporarily located at Arygle Centre, Mongkok.
1987 July
  • Department of Manufacturing Engineering (ME) is established.
    There are 8 academic staff members and 2 clerical officers in October 1987 in the Department.
1988 March
  • BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering is proposed and validated by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), UK.
September
  • Higher Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering (HDME) in both FT and PTE modes is launched.
1989 April
  • CPHK is relocated to Phase I of the permanent campus at Tat Chee Avenue.
    The 1st MPhil student is admitted to the Department.
September
  • BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering (BEME) in FT mode, and Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Management (PgDEM) in PTE mode are launched.
November
  • BEME is granted full accreditation for a period of 3 years up to and including the 1991 intake by the Institution of Production Engineers (IProdE), UK. It was considered one of the best and most innovative programmes.
1990 September
  • BEME in PTE mode is launched.
  • The Department's ME Laboratories is established, following the breaking up of the Centralised Laboratories and Workshops.
1991 September
  • HDME is discontinued.
    CPHK faculty system is implemented.
November
  • The 1st cohort of HDME-FT and PgDEM students are graduated.
    An Industrial Services Unit is established.
1992 July
  • Phase II of the permanent campus is completed; the Department is relocated from the green zone to the yellow zone of the academic building.
September
  • BEng (Hons) in Mechatronic Engineering (BEMTE) in FT mode, which has been validated by CNAA, is launched.
  • BEME is revalidated by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation (HKCAA).
  • MSc in Industrial Automation (MScIA) in PTE mode is launched.
  • PgDEM is upgraded to MSc in Engineering Management (MScEM).
  • The Department participates in the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee (UPGC) Engineering Sectoral Review.
November
  • The 1st cohort of HDME-PT and BEME-PT students are graduated.
1993 September
  • BEMTE in PTE mode is launched.
November
  • The 1st MPhil student is graduated.
1994 January
  • CPHK is renamed as City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK).
April
  • BEME* and BEMTE** are accredited by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), UK.
    * Granted accreditation for a period of 3 years from 1994 intake, for graduates attaining 2nd class honours or above.
    ** Granted interim recognition for a similar period (backdated to include 1992 and 1993 intake).
July
  • Rapid Prototyping Technology Centre is established with a funding of HK$29.58m from Industrial Technology Development Council (ITDC). It was a joint project with the Hong Kong Productivity Council for 3 years.
September
  • BSc in Design and Technology (BScDT) in PTE mode is launched as a self-financed programme, with full support from the Education Department of the HK Government.
1995 July
  • The Department receives a donation of UG II CAD/CAM system software tools with a total market value of HK$26.4m from EDS Asia Pacific Ltd.
September
  • MEng in Manufacturing Engineering with Business Management (MEMEBM) in FT mode is launched.
  • MScIA is re-titled as MSc in Automated System and Management (MScASM).
  • Centre for Intelligent Design, Automation and Manufacturing (CIDAM) is established, under the directorship of Professor S K Tso.
1996 July
  • Department of Manufacturing Engineering is renamed as Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management (MEEM).
December
  • The Department participates in the University Grants Council (UGC) Research Assessment Exercise. The growth in the number and proportion of active researchers in MEEM was significant over the 1994 exercise.
  • The Department also participates in UGC Teaching and Learning Quality Process Review. CityU was singled out as one of the two local universities with the most developed and most quality assurance systems.
1997 January
  • BEME and BEMTE are accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
    Both granted full accreditation for a period of 5 years for all intake classes up to and including the year 2001.
September
  • BSc in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (BScIEEM) in full-time mode is launched.
  • CityU implements Credit Unit System and English Enhancement Programme.
November
  • The 1st PhD student is graduated.
1999 September
  • Students from mainland China are selected and admitted into our Bachelor's degree programmes.
2000 August
  • Prof. Mai Y-W., Chair Professor in Materials Engineering, is appointed as new HoD.
December
  • Advanced Coatings Applied Research Laboratory (ACARL) is established with a total funding of HK$20.41m from the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) and local manufacturing industry. Including $9.8m for 3 years and $7.3m for another 3 years from ITC.
2001 April
  • Enterprise Knowledge Integration and Transfer (E-KIT) Laboratory is established with seed money of HK$1m from CityU and local industry.
May
  • Smart Asset Management Research Laboratory (SAMRL) is established with funding support of HK$1m from local industry.
July
  • The Department participates in the Industrial Attachment Scheme (IAS) of FSE.
September
  • MEEM Association Ltd (MEEMA) is formed and registered as a limited company to serve our Alumni.
  • Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is launched.
  • Product Lifecycle Management Competency Unit (PLMCU) is inaugurated and Co-operation Agreement with Dassault Systemes and MTECH Engineering Co. Ltd is signed.
  • A donation of software packages worth a total market value more than HK$30m is received from IBM/Dassault. The packages included CATIA for product design, ENOVIA for e-business, and DELMIA for digital manufacturing.
October
  • BEME, BScDT and BScIEEM became BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Informatics and Systems Engineering (BEMISE), BEng (Hons) in Design and Technology (BEDT) and BEng (Hons) in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (BEIEEM) respectively.
2002 January
  • The 1st issue of MEEM Newsletter is published.
April
  • The four newly revised Bachelor's degree programmes are accredited by the HKIE. BEMISE, BEMTE and BEIEEM are granted full accreditation for 5 years up to and including 2006. BEDT is granted provisional accreditation until the first cohort of 2004.
July
  • Prof. K.V. Patri, the founding HoD, retires and is conferred the title of Emeritus Professor, the first one in CityU.
  • Prof. Mai returns to the University of Sydney at the end of his 2 years contract as HoD.
August
  • The Department participates in the Co-op Education Scheme (CES) which is newly launched by FSE.
  • The Department receives a donation of software packages of HK$1.2m from Autodesk.
September
  • The four new programme structures and programme titles are fully implemented.
November
  • MEMEBM is restructured and re-titled as MEng in Manufacturing Systems with Business Management (MEMSBM) to admit students from BEIEEM and BEMTE as well.
  • The Department receives a donation of software packages of US$1.2m from PTC.
2003 February
  • A new design of MEEM homepage is launched.
April
  • Pro. Michael YY Hung is appointed as the new HoD.
May
  • Staff and students jointly organises the MEEM Festival, which is an event to be repeated annually.
August
  • The Department organises its first summer workshop for local secondary school students, called Young Engineers Summer Camp (YES Camp 2003).
September
  • MEMSBM is discontinued.
December
  • The Department announces the Industry-MEEM Alliance Programme (I-MAP) enabling it to enhance the competitiveness of industrial companies.
2004 July
  • The Department offers its second summer workshop - MEEM Young Engineers Summer Camp 2004, for local secondary school students.
2005 August
  • The summer workshop this year is called Chiang Chen MEEM Technology Workshop and is sponsored by the Chiang Chen Industrial Charity Foundation (Hong Kong) Ltd.
2006 July
  • Prof. Michael YY Hung's contract as HoD has expired. Prof. CH Chan, Dean of FSE, becomes the acting HoD while the Department is searching for a new HoD.
August
  • This year's summer workshop is called Siemens MEEM Technology Workshop 2006. It is sponsored by Siemens Ltd (Hong Kong) - Automation and Drives Division.
September
  • MEEM Association Ltd (MEEMA) is renamed as MEEM Alumni Association (MEEMAA). A new Alumni page is created within MEEM website for MEEMAA to serve as a link for the alumni.
