Research Interests: Nano-structured Materials, Thin Films and Nano-multilayers, Nanoscale Modeling and Simulation

Dr Shen, a Zhejiang University graduate, received his PhD in materials science from University of Newcastle in 1991 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in surface science at University of Western Ontario, Canada from 1991 to 1992. Currently he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering & Engineering Management, City University of Hong Kong. He was also a visiting Scientist at University of Bonn, Germany in 1995 and at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore in 1999. Dr Shen has extensive research experience in the areas of nanostructured materials, thin films, nanocomposites, multi-layers, surface and interface characterization, nanoscale modeling and simulation. His current research activities are mainly focused on three major topics: (i) mechanical, structural, and tribological properties of thin films (metals, alloys, nitrides, carbides, and oxides) and nano-multilayers, (ii) fabrication and characterization of advanced superhard nanocomposite materials, and (iii) nanoscale modeling and simulation. He has published more than 180 papers including ~120 SCI journal and ~60 conference publications.
