MEEM Seminar 0708_034

Table-top Micromanufacturing Technology

Abstract

This presentation provides details into a new technology referred to as table top manufacturing. Table top manufacturing have been proposed within the manufacturing research community to provide an alternative, less expensive and more agile alternative to the manufacture of small scale components. The motivation for such systems is discussed, as well as the various technologies required in the development of such advanced micro-scale manufacturing systems. The applications of such systems are discussed with further discussion of the future of this approach to manufacturing.

This seminar will also provide a preamble to the new course on Micro System Technology (MEEM 6005) planned for 2009. The details of this course are briefly discussed.

About the Speaker

James K. Mills graduated with the Bachelor's (EE) (Manitoba) and Master's (EE) (Toronto) in 1980 and 1982 and Ph.D. (ME) degree in 1987, specializing in control system design. His research interests have encompassed a number of related areas, including: robot control, design of actuators, localization, development of fixtureless assembly technology, design and control of high speed machines, development of neural network controllers, MEMS 3D assembly, MEMS robotic assembly task execution, micro-scale biological task control and automation. He and his students have published over 320 refereed conference and journal papers. As Associate Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering he has made significant advances in the development of a new Mechatronics curriculum and funding for that program.
