As the research in the various areas within the Department developed, and the competence and size of its activity increased, research groups are formed. The function of the research groups is to foster and co-ordinate the research activities in their area and to provide an effective structure for co-operation in activities which span across the interests of two or more groups. A research group comprises members of academic staff and MPhil and PhD students, all working in related research areas, able to discuss problems and gain from each other's experience. Currently, there are three main research areas classified for the award of MPhil or PhD in the Department. They are:
