Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Design and Technology (BEDT)

Introduction

The BEng (Hons) Design and Technology is a non-government funded programme, which is aimed towards meeting the professional needs of Hong Kong industries in product design and manufacturing. The programme has been revamped by incorporating several new technical subjects in the new curriculum.

Programme Aims

To provide education opportunities for those who wish to pursue a career in product design and manufacturing and seek opportunities in Hong Kong, Pearl River Delta Region, or globally.

Programme Objectives

The graduates after the completion of the programme should be able to

1. develop a fundamental understanding of the analysis and design of mechanical devices;
2. develop the ability to conceptualize, analyze, select and apply mechanical entities (components, production equipment and tooling) in the design and manufacture of discrete products;
3. further enhance their creative abilities, application skills and team work capability in the design and manufacture of discrete products by undertaking a substantial design/ technology project.
   
   In addition, with a choice of electives that are available, students should be able to
4. develop a broad understanding of the implementation and utilization of electrical/electronic devices, computer hardware and software and communication and control systems to support the design of useful products; and
5. develop an overview of design management process with particular emphasis on product design, quality, reliability and economic aspects.

Assessment and Final Award

In order to be recommended for the award of BEng (Hons) in Design & Technology, a student must have obtained a pass in all the required courses and satisfy the other minimum requirements as well as maintain a Graduation Grade Point Average of 1.7 or above. Total credits required for this programme are 96 including credit transfers.

Programme Administration

The Programme Leader, Dr Kamineni Rao, is a member of staff in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering & Engineering Management. The Programme management also includes a Deputy Programme Leader and three year tutors. There will be a Programme Committee, with teaching staff and students represented.

Professional Recognitions

This Programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates of this programme meet the academic requirements for becoming a Corporate Member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Tuition Fees

The last cohort of students of this programme was admitted in 2008. The tuition fee for students admitted in 2008 and before is $2,100 per credit unit.
