Mr CHEN Yin, a PhD student, won a First Class Award at the 7th National Postgraduate Mathematics Contest in Modelling for his work on the early detection of mutated genes that can cause colorectal cancer, together with two other master's degree graduates from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Systems. They were one of the 61 teams to receive the Award selected from among 1,995 teams formed by nearly 6,000 higher degree students from 229 institutions across the country.

Congratulations to Professor Han-Xiong Li on being elevated to IEEE Fellow for his contributions to fuzzy logic control and its applications, effective 1 January 2011. IEEE Fellow is a distinction and the highest grade of membership in the IEEE reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in IEEE-designated fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for one of the Association's most prestigious honours, elevation to IEEE Fellow.

Mr PM Lai, an EngD student, received the Excellent Papers Award at the Fourth International Conference on Management of e-Commerce and e-Government 2010 held in Chengdu, China between 23 and 24 October 2010. The title of his paper is "Developing an Analytical Framework for Mobile Payments Adoption in Retailing: A Supply-Side Perspective", co-authored with his supervisor, Dr KB Chuah.

Mr HU Songyu, a PhD student, received the 2010 SLAS Young Scientist Award from the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) at the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE) in Toronto, Canada, 21-24 August, for his paper entitled "Dynamics analysis and closed-loop control of biological cells in transportation using robotic manipulation system with optical tweezers." The paper was co-authored with Professor Sun Dong and Chair Professor Gary Feng Gang, under the supervision of Professor Sun. Hu Songyu will present his paper at the SLAS annual conference and exhibition in California in January 2011 which will be featured in the SLAS peer-reviewed Journal of the Association for Laboratory Automation.

Mr YANG Jianyu, a PhD student, won the "Best Paper in Automation" Award with the paper "A new descriptor for 3D trajectory recognition via modified CDTW" co-authored with Dr Y. F. Li and Prof K. Wang in the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Automation and Logistics, held in Hong Kong from 16 to 18 August. Yang Jianyu is a student supervised by Dr Y. F. Li in the CityU/USTC joint PhD programme in Suzhou.

(Message from the Acting Dean): The College Medal is awarded annually to a final-year undergraduate student in recognition of his/ her academic excellence and all-round personal qualities. I am pleased to announce that Mr CHEN Zixiang, a 2010 graduate of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in e-Logistics and Technology Management, is selected for the College Medal 2010.
Mr CHEN is a dedicated and talented student who has been placed on the Dean's List for five times throughout his 4-year studies at CityU. His outstanding academic performance has earned him a number of scholarships and awards. He and his teammates are the winners of the Gold Award of the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards 2010. His distinguished attainments have proven the competitiveness of CityU students. On the other hand, he has demonstrated his strong sense of belonging to CityU and his department by his active participation in CityU's/ departmental student services and activities.
With his well-rounded abilities and sense of belonging to his alma mater, we strongly believe that he would become an excellent ambassador of the College as well as the University.

Congratulations once again to Year 3 BEeLTM student Eric Chen Zixiang on winning the Third Prize of the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition 2010 held in Singapore Management University together with Kunal Parwani (Marketing). The competition is held biennially since 2001 and organized specially for undergraduate, college and polytechnic students around the world, which continues to be a platform for entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Participants were able to showcase their business plans and entrepreneurial talents on a global stage, attract seed funding to further their business ambitions as well as extend their network of friends and business contacts through the competition. The winning team was awarded US$3000 for the Third Prize as part of the startup capital.

Congratulations to Year 3 BEeLTM student Eric Chen Zixiang on winning the Best of the Best Award of the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards 2009-10 regional competition for the Hong Kong team together with Kunal Parwani (Marketing) and Yang Zhou (Accountancy and Law) from CityU. The HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards is a regional business plan competition for post-secondary students from Hong Kong and countries in Asia to demonstrate their creativity and business acumen. Gold Award winners from each participating country or territory competed for the Best of the Best Award in Malaysia this year. The winning team was awarded an HSBC business development fund of HK$100,000.

Steven wins 123 votes from his fellow MEEM classmates and becomes Student of the Year 2009. The award was established in recognition of outstanding MEEM students for their academic achievements, students' activities contributions as well as social commitments.
It was a surprise and honor for Steven when he learnt that he has voted the winner of the award. Steven was grateful and happy to be in the MEEM family. Congratulations to Eric Chen Zixiang on becoming the 2nd winner of the Global Business Ethics Contest 2008. The contest is organized by the Junior Achievement Hong Kong and sponsored by ExonMobil. It is open to all undergraduates and upper secondary school. The contest consists of two parts, part one is an individual essay, the topic of which is 'What are the major ethical challenges that Hong Kong is facing nowadays? How would you propose to address these challenges?'. Part two is debate, the topic of which is the 'the cost of ethical leadership is high, do you agree?'.

Two teams formed by MEEM students, "City Development" & "City United" took part in ROBOCON 2008 Hong Kong Contest (全港大專生機械人賽 2008) on June 22 at Hong Kong Science Park. Our students designed and developed automatic and manual robots that can obtain a cube of butter from bowls placed in the higher section of the game field. Points would be given to the robots that obtained cubes of butter directly from the bowls and lifted them up in the air. The teams were supervised by Dr YF Li, Dr Louis Liu, Dr BL Luk & Dr Patrick Wong.
The aim of the contest is to create friendship and promote the exchange of experience in engineering and information technology among the young people in the Asia-Pacific region.
"City United" team grabbed the HKSTP Best Team Spirit Award (香港科技園最佳團隊精神獎). Congratulations!

Congratulations! HUI Shun Leong, NGUYEN Son Duong, XU Mai and ZHANG Yijing honorably received the 1st Runner Up of 2008 Company Based Student Project Competition organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality. Their project titled "Reduction of the material inventory level" was under the supervision of Dr KS Chin and Dr Zoie Wong. The objective of the program is let students work on an actual industrial case and proposes resolution. This allows them to gain experience in resolving real-world industrial problems.
