Defining MEEM

Basic definition of engineering

Manufacturing Engineering can be defined as the transformation of raw materials into useful products through the most economical and competitive methods, making full use of the scientific principles and innovative designs to gain wide-spread acceptance.

A Manufacturing Engineer, therefore, is someone who determines and defines the equipment, tools, and processes required to convert the materials into innovative products through the latest technologies embodying automation, quality control, and ensuring the challenges in health, safety, and environmental regulations are met.

Manufacturing technologies are currently undergoing rapid changes due to the decreasing of the technology cycle duration. The average technology cycle today is only about three years, as compared to over 20 years in the 1970s. Therefore, we aim to produce engineering professionals who have a life-long learning attitude ingrained in their hearts, fully equipped with the latest information and skills in material science, physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, and health and safety regulations, with a dose of engineering management skills to assist their ascension into management.

Manufacturing is the foundation of Hong Kong's economic development. As HK and Asian Pacific begin to move into higher value-added industries, technical expertise and innovative management of technology are the heart of HK's future. We strive to be the hub of manufacturing science and technology to usher in the future.
