Major Allocation (for 2016-17 intake)

The top 40% of students in the department will be allocated to their first choice major according to the following criteria:

  • Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B;
  • No failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and
  • Completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B, including the number of credit units specified by the College of Science & Engineering / respective Home Academic Unit *.

* Credits earned from “EL0200A/B English for Academic Purposes” and “CHIN1001 University Chinese I” taken in Semesters A and B 2015/16 will be counted towards the 30 credit unit requirement. However, grades obtained from the above two courses will not be included in the GPA calculation.

For the remaining 60% of students, the major allocation will be based on their choice of priority, availability of places and the following selection criteria of individual majors:

BEng Mechanical Engineering, and
BEng Nuclear and Risk Engineering

  1. Weighted GPA (calculated based on a minimum of 24 credit units #)
    • MA1200/MA1300, MA1201/MA1301 and AP1201 (weighting x 3)
    • CS1102/CS1302, BCH1100 and BCH1200 (weighting x 2)
    • Other courses (weighting x 1)
  2. CGPA
  3. Student’s choice

BEng Bioengineering

  1. Weighted GPA (calculated based on a minimum of 24 credit units #)
    • MA1200/MA1300, MA1201/MA1301, AP1201, BCH1100 and BCH1200 (weighting x 3)
    • CS1102/CS1302 (weighting x 2)
    • Other courses (weighting x 1)
  2. CGPA
  3. Student’s choice

# In case that a student has taken less than 24 credit units, the total points of all courses will be divided by 24 credit units in the calculation of the weighted GPA. If a student has taken more than 24 credit units, all course grades will be included in the calculation of the weighted GPA.

15 June 2017 Phase One majors allocation exercise
From 16 June 2017 Students being allocated a major to view the allocation result via the online system
16-23 June 2017 Colleges/School to stipulate a quota for each major in order to facilitate the Phase Two majors allocation exercise (the quota will be shown in the online system for students’ reference)
27-29 June 2017 Remaining students who have not been allocated a major after the Phase One majors allocation to revise their choice of majors (optional)
30 June – 7 July 2017 School/Departments to prioritize the remaining students who have not been allocated a major in the Phase One majors allocation exercise
11 July 2017 Phase Two majors allocation exercise
From 12 July 2017 Remaining students to view the allocated major via the online system
