# i) Students may take GE courses to fulfil the distributional GE requirement, GE1501 Chinese Civilization – History and Philosophy, and/or any courses to fulfil the University’s graduation requirement in their common first-year.
ii) Students may refer to www6.cityu.edu.hk/ge_info/ for the list of GE courses on offer.
+ Students are advised to take AP1201 in the first year as a prerequisite for core courses to be taken in Year 2.
@ Students who intend to choose the BIE major are advised to take BCH1200 in the first year which is a prerequisite for a core course scheduled in Year 2 Semester A.

English & Chinese Language Requirements

Students whose entry qualification in HKDSE English Language/Chinese Language is below Level 4 are required to take the following additional language courses:

  1. EL0200A English for Academic Purposes 1 (3 credit units *) and/or
    EL0200B English for Academic Purposes 2 (3 credit units *) #
  2. CHIN1001 University Chinese I (3 credit units *)

# Early Exit Arrangement
Students successfully completing EL0200A and EL0200B for a total of 6 credits will be considered to have achieved the minimum standard required for proceeding to the GE English courses. Students who have achieved a grade B or above in their overall course results for EL0200A will be permitted to exit the programme at this point. They will achieve 3 credits and also be considered to have satisfied the pre-requistie for entry to the GE English courses.

* The credits earned from taking EL0200A and/or EL0200B, and CHIN1001 will not be counted towards the minimum credit units required for graduation and will not be included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average (CGPA). However, they will be counted towards the maximum credit units permitted.


For students who do not have Hong Kong public examinations results:

  • English Language Requirement: The English Language Centre (ELC) will invite them to sit for an English Placement Test to determine whether they need to take the courses EL0200A and EL0200B. Students may, instead of taking the Test, provide an alternative English proficiency qualification (e.g. TOFEL or IELTS) for consideration by the ELC. A waiver from taking the EL0200A and EL0200B may be granted for students who have achieved the required English proficiency. For details, please visit the website of English Language Centre.
  • Chinese Language Requirement: students are not required to take additional Chinese course.

Suggested First-year Study Plan

Points to note:
  1. Students are advised to plan their study according to the suggested study plan to avoid possible time conflict between courses.
  2. For courses that have not been pre-assigned, i.e. BCH1200 Discovery in Biology and GE courses, students will need to register for them on web during the add/drop period.
  3. Students wishing to drop/change a pre-assigned course will need to do so on web or using the paper form during the add/drop period. However, after dropping/changing the course, the places may be taken up by other students and you may not be able to enrol in the pre-assigned course again.

Add/Drop of Gateway Education (GE) Courses

Each first-year student will only be allowed to register for ONE GE course in Areas 1-3 during the specific period on 16 August. Any such GE courses exceeding the limit will be de-registered by the system without prior notice

Open registration of GE courses as well as all other courses will start from 19 August, 8:45 am. Students may add additional GE courses if seats are available. For details, please visit ARRO’s website.
