Purpose and Themes. Equation solving is at the core of several problems in science and technology. Understanding the complexity of different forms of equation solving is a key issue which has attracted the attention of mathematicians and computer scientists in the last few years. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together experts in these fields to discuss this issue. The Workshop will focus on the following problems:
Invited and Contributed Presentations. In addition to the plenary presentations the Workshop will have a number of invited and contributed presentations. If you wish to present a talk, submit the title and an abstract of no more than 300 words to the address below, preferably electronically, by June 15, 1999. Electronic submissions should be in plain text or Latex format. Please include your name, affiliation, address, and email address in your submission. You will be notified of the acceptance of your talk within one month of the date we receive your abstract.
Venue and Accommodations. The Workshop will be held at City University of Hong Kong. Rooms in nearby hotels can be booked at a price around HK$400 to HK$600. To do so contact Colette Lam (see Contact Information below).
Local Travel. Hong Kong has an excellent public transportation system, consisting of underground trains, trains, buses and taxis. Frequency of service is every few minutes. City University of Hong Kong is touching the Kowloon Tong underground railway station. The simplest way to reach City University from Hong Kong International Airport is taking the Airport Express to Kowloon station and a taxi from there.
International Travel and Visas. Visitors to Hong Kong from some countries require a visa. If you are in doubt, please contact the Chinese Consulate nearest you. Some conference participants may wish to visit the Chinese Mainland before or after the Workshop. All foreigners visiting the Mainland require a visa, which may be obtained from the Chinese Consulate. However, for short trips to the Mainland you may obtain a tourist visa in Hong Kong within a matter of a few days.
About Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a modern metropolis influenced by both oriental and western cultures and home to over 6 million people. The native tongue of most residents is Cantonese, but English and Mandarin speakers can get around easily. The local currency has an exchange rate of HK$7.75 app. US$1.
Organizers. The Workshop on Complexity of Equation Solving and Algebra is organized by Felipe Cucker and Steve Smale. It is part of the Hong Kong Fall 1999 Special Semester on Foundations of Computational Mathematics based at City University of Hong Kong, and organized under the auspices of the FoCM organization. Participants in the Workshop are encouraged to extend their stay in Hong Kong to participate in other activities of the FoCM 1999 Autumn Semester, including the following other workshops
