French is spoken around the world from France to Canada,
from North and West Africa to the Indian Ocean, from the
Caribbean to Polynesia, in Europe, North America, Africa
and Asia. The francophone countries offer some of the
most diverse and stimulating cultures for study and closer
European integration makes knowledge of French language,
culture and institutions both necessary and rewarding.
French (français) is the third-largest
of the Romance languages in terms of number of native
speakers, after Spanish and Portuguese, being spoken by
about 65 million people as a mother tongue, and by another
50 million people as a second language.
It is an official language in 29 countries.

French is also an official or
administrative language in several communities and international
organisations (such as the European Union, International
Olympic Committee, World Trade Organization, NATO, FINA,
FIA, FIFA, World Anti-Doping Agency, United Nations, African
Union, International Court of Justice, IHO, International
Secretariat for Water, International Association of Political
Science, International Bureau of Weights and Measures,
European Broadcasting Union, ESA, Universal Postal Union,
Interpol and so on) and among the six official of the
United Nations and of all its agencies. While the status
of French as the leading language for international communication
has declined since its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries
due to the rise of English, it maintains a prominent position.

The French Section offers its students
a thorough training in French language that enables them
to interact and communicate effectively with native French
speakers globally. Our
programs offer students the opportunity to achieve high
competence in written and spoken French, in understanding
French-Speaking countries’ cultures, and in applying
this linguistic, literary and cultural knowledge in
the study of other disciplines.
The French Section faculty members have offices in Kowloon
Tong, while the French courses are taught in both Kowloon
Tong Campus and Telford Campus (Kowloon Bay). |
