Associate of Arts in Bilingual Communication Studies
(English and Chinese)

Mode of Study: Two-year Full-time

PROGRAMME AIMS
This programme aims to provide a solid foundation in the practical use of English and Chinese, and to prepare students for bilingual work and mediation, application of communication technology and progression onto further studies in relevant language and communication areas.

CAREER PROSPECTS
Graduates can take up work that requires proficiency in Putonghua, written Chinese, spoken and written English as well as in the use of computer technology for communication. Graduates of this programme will have a good command of two languages (specifically English and Chinese for this option) to enable them to take up career positions in customer services, marketing, media, publication, journalism and public relations in both private and public sectors.

ARTICULATION/ FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates can also continue their studies in relevant degree programmes in language and communication areas with advanced standing both locally and overseas. Articulation arrangements have been made to enable graduates from this programme to pursue relevant BA programmes in universities in the UK, such as University of Central Lancashire, University of Portsmouth, Middlesex University and University of Westminster, and Australian universities such as Monash University.



MAIN SUBJECT AREAS
  • English Communication Skills, a core theme that focuses on fundamentals of communication, English language activation and enrichment, English Business communication and professional image building.
  • Chinese Communication Skills, a core theme that focuses on developing students’ practical skills in Chinese writing through building a good knowledge of Chinese language structure, stylistics and Chinese Literature. Putonghua communication skills are also taught.
  • Communication Technology, a supporting theme that develops students' communication skills through desktop publishing and the Internet. Students learn communication technology on both Chinese and English platforms.
  • Language Mediation, a supporting theme that enables students to mediate between the two languages – Chinese and English for this specific option - through training in translation.
 
PROGRAMME ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy one of the following:
  • E in 1 HKALE or E in 2 HKALE AS subjects plus E in 5 HKCEE subjects; or
  • Have a recognized diploma in relevant disciplines
