Email Alerts and RSS Feeds for Journal Table of Contents and Automatic Search Results

Many electronic resource providers now offer free alerting services that help you keep yourself up-to-date with current literature in particular subject areas. These alerts are usually in the form of email notifications, or are delivered via RSS (more about RSS from Wikipedia and whatisrss.com) to inform users of new contents that become available online.

The most common types of alerts:

  • Table of Contents Alerts: Get notifications when new issues of selected journals become available.
  • Automated Searches: Search statements can be saved and rerun automatically. You will be notified of new items retrieved.
  • Citation Alerts: Get notification when an article has been cited.

You are usually, but not always, required to register for a free personal account before you can create email alerts. Setting up RSS feeds, on the other hand, usually does not require registration of a personal account but you need to install an RSS reader/aggregator on your computer or register at an RSS reader web site beforehand. List of RSS readers/aggregators can be found on the Internet. Some are free and some you have to pay for.

Here are some examples of free RSS readers (their inclusion here does not constitute a recommendation):

Desktop Reader Web-based Reader
FeedReader Bloglines
RSSOwl MyYahoo
RssReader Rojo
