Course Descriptions

(Please note that the duration of each of the following workshops is 1 hr. 30 min.)

Google It! Search Strategies and Tips for Google and Beyond

Participants will learn strategies to help them use Google more efficiently and effectively.  Different Google tools will be introduced as well as additional search engines and directories.

Keeping Current with Research: RSS and Journal Alerts

This workshop will help participants identify a variety of ways to keep abreast of their research interests. In addition to bookmarking useful websites and visiting them regularly, researchers can now make use of online tools to keep themselves up-to-date. This workshop will focus on the use of these tools to automatically receive e-mail alerts and RSS feeds about new publications in selected areas of study.

Introduction to Finding Company Information

As part of this workshop, participants will learn how to find company profiles, summary financial information, and key competitors.  They will also learn how to search news sources and journals to locate independent analyses of company strategies.

Journal Rankings – Evaluating the Impact and Quality of Journals

Participants will be introduced to the major tools to evaluate journals and to create journal rankings. They will learn how to find a journal’s impact factor, total cites, quartile in category, and more, using Journal Citation Report (JCR) of Thomson Reuters. Another tool, Scopus Analyzer, will also be covered in the workshop to show two other metrics to measure the performance of journals: SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP).
