Information Research Skills for Business Students (2011-2012)
Purpose
Information Research Skills for Business Students provides the opportunity for students to develop and improve their information research skills related to the field of Business, including their abilities to: explain the significance of developing research skills; identify appropriate information resources for use in Business study and practice; apply basic search strategies and criteria to identify, locate and evaluate information sources; use information ethically.
The Course
This interactive course, with 10 self-paced online learning modules, is to be accessed on Blackboard . The course starts on 20 September 2011 and
will end on 14 July 2012 .
Modules of the Course:
- Why are research skills important?
- Google doesn’t have it all
- Start smart by knowing when to use what
- What tools are available for your use?
- Selecting your keywords and other search tips
- How to find books and articles?
- Where to find company, industry, statistical and market information?
- How to tell if your sources are good enough for your study and research?
- Preventing plagiarism
- Understanding referencing/citing sources of information
There are also activities such as readings, interactive tutorials and exercises
to reinforce learning.
Get a Certificate!
Registered students who have taken all the ten modules, completed all quizzes,
and scored at least 80% for each quiz, will be awarded an e-certificate by
email according to the following schedule:

Registration and Access
Online registration is via AIMS. Registration period starts
from 19 September 2011 and ends on 23 June 2012.
To register:
- Log in AIMS.
- Select Student Services tab.
- Select On-line Application for In-house Student Development Courses.
- Follow the instruction on screen to enroll for "Information Research Skills for Business Students".
To access:
Access to "Information Research Skills for Business Students" will be available 24 hours after your registration via AIMS:
- Log in CityU e-Portal.
- Select the My CityU tab.
- Under "My Developmental Course Organizations" in the "My Organizations" box,
select Information Research Skills for Business Students.
Notes to Instructors and CityU Staff
CityU staff members are also welcome to take the Course.
To try out or take the Course, you need to register via AIMS:
- Log in AIMS.
- Select Staff Services.
- Select Staff Development.
- Select On-line Application for In-house Staff Development Courses.
- Follow the instruction on screen to enroll for "Information Research Skills for Business Students".
- 24 hours after your registration, you
will be able to access the Course on Blackboard. Just log in CityU
e-Portal, select the My CityU tab, then select
Information Research Skills for Business Students under "My Developmental Course Organizations" in the "My Organizations" box.
