

Christopher Candlin is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department
of English at City University of Hong Kong and also Professor of
Linguistics at Macquarie University Sydney where he is the Executive
Director of the National Centre for English Language Teaching & Research
and Director of the Centre for Language in Social Life. His main interests
are in pragmatics and discourse analysis and their application to the
description and explanation of professional-client communication,
especially in workplace contexts. He is also involved in curriculum
development, teacher in-service education and language assessment. He edits
the Applied Linguistics and Language Study series and the Language in
Social Life series for Longman and serves on the boards of a number of
academic journals.
