Title: The Role of Play in the Accelerated Learning Ambience in the Teaching of Foreign Languages
Abstract/Summary: In the Accelerated Teaching and Learning Method,
games and plays are intergal part of the methodology.
Students use games and drama production to apply
the newly acquired vocabulary, expressions and
grammatical structure.
The aim of games and play is to reduce inhibition
and anxiety in learning and acquisition of the
foreign langauge especially for mature learners.
Through games and plays, learning becomes child-
like, and anxiety which may prevent learning, could
be reduced. Learners become more receptive, and
learning is fun under the playful and non stressful
environment.
The paper examinates the application of Accelerated
Learning and Teaching Method to the first year
Australian students of Chinese (Putonghua) in
education at the University of Newcastle.
It concludes that learning through games and drama
in Accelerated Learning and Teaching could encourage
the operation of certain psychological and
intellectual factors which could facilitate
communication heightened self-esteem, motivation
and spontaneity, reinforcing learning, improving
intonation and building confidence.
