Discovery Corner - Virtual Reality Services (CAVE)


Overview

As an important part of the University, the library provides the new facilities and services to assist in the deepening of the Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC), the Library developed a new Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (also known as CAVE) to provide students with tools for discovery and innovation during their learning and research. It is a projection-based Virtual Reality (VR) display that multiple users can use to share the same experience inside a room-sized cube. Furthermore, the room is also equipped with VR Head Mount Display (HMD) device which provides students with cutting edge tools of advanced technologies.   • 3D projectors (Short Throw and Ultra Short Throw)
  • Motion Capture Devices with markers and associated software
  • Server with powerful CPU and advanced display cards
  • Unity – Game Engine
  • RF 3D active glasses with emitter
  • Other accessories such as joystick etc.
  • Audio speaker
  • Wireless Head-mounted Display (HMD) HTC VIVE Pro and associated software and accessories
  • 360-degree panoramic camera

Location of the CAVE

The CAVE is located at entrance of Information Space.

Terms of Services

  • The CAVE is free for use by all CityU students, staff of programmes leading to CityU awards including associate degree, bachelor's degree and postgraduate degree.
  • The facility and the CAVE must be checked out and used during service hours. The facilities include workstations next to the CAVE.
  • Reservations are limited to a maximum of 8 hours per week.
  • Bookings can be made up to 5 days in advance.
  • To ensure fair access to all eligible users, the facilities are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • The check-out operation also includes the use of powerful workstation(s) for the projection and display.
  • The facilities are used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use the facilities to create digital objects that are against the law, obscene, in violation of another’s intellectual property rights.
  • All booking requests are subject to approval based on scheduling and availability. The Library reserves the right to refuse any requests for any reason.
  • The performance of the CAVE computing facilities is advanced and powerful. However, the Library will not guarantee any computing performance requirement from the user.
  • The users are responsible for the data generation and backup and the Library will not be responsible for any loss of data and program in the system.

Technical support session

For setting up a technical support session, patrons can either send an email message to libemt@cityu.edu.hk at least 3 working days in advance, or go to IT Help Desk in-person to schedule a technical support session.
