Sustainability Exhibition

Following the success of the Sustainability Exhibition co-organized with the Provost Office in April 2016 at the Library, another 5 projects were showcased from 17 October to 4 November 2016. Students were invited to take a brief tour of the exhibition and then took part in an online quiz about the exhibition. Participants who got most answers correct received souvenirs. Over 240 students took part in the quiz.

Participated departments and their projects:

1. Campus Air Monitoring (CAM) Network in CityU for Environment Awareness and Energy Saving Facility Management (School of Energy Environment + CDFO)

Through this project, it is aimed to develop Hong Kong’s first campus air monitoring network with mobile app for broadcasting and to promote environmental awareness for university staff and students. The monitoring network enabled the evaluation of air quality in campus and building, and diagnose ventilation trouble spots. Suggestions of scientific and engineering solutions for more cost effective operation and a smart and sustainable campus would be provided.

2. Promoting Issues of Sustainability Through Contemporary Media (School of Creative Media)

With collected theme “Sustained Signage”, provocative road signs and animations were created to enhance an awareness of sustainability issues and to encourage people to avoid behaviours that are contrary to sustainability.

3. 2016 Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Green Ambassador Scheme (Department of Public Policy)

Green Ambassadors from CityU were on duty at the Hong Kong Stadium during the 2016 Hong Kong Ruby Sevens to collect plastic waste. It enabled students to gain hands-on experience on plastic waste recycling management in collaboration with different stakeholders and allowed students to demonstrate their ability to identify plastic waste recycling problems as well as solutions to plastic waste recycling challenges in Hong Kong. Through this scheme, it was hoped to develop students’ innovation for tackling low public awareness on plastic waste recycling through redesigning plastic waste recycling bins, to enhance public awareness on plastic waste recycling and environmental protection through media exposure, as well as to promote a positive behavioral change in the public’s performance of plastic waste recycling.

4. Inventing Food and Foodways: Towards a sustainable Model (Department of Asian & International Studies)

This project aimed to promote food and sustainability education in 3 dimensions:

  • • Teaching and learning (through GE course GE2239 on “Food – Culture, Science and Society”)
    • Food and sustainability research (students participated in the work of food NGOs and food banks)
    • Community engagement, by organizing Organic Food Carnival and June Corn Festival at CityU by bringing local food communicates to campus, and students conducted talk on food waste and food education at the community centre.

5. Investigating Time-Space Use Pattern of CityU Students for Sustainable Campus Development and Maintenance (Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering)

In an attempt to achieve sustainability goals and improve functionality, CityU specifies “rational space utilization” in its Strategic Plan 2010-2015. This project aimed to support this initiative by offering empirical data that reveal the relationship between CityU students’ activities, their spatial choices, and their satisfaction from space-use.
