About the Speaker

Mr David Ai, Director of CityU’s Knowledge Transfer Office and Co-founder of IIPCC HK Chapter, has extensive experience in technology licensing, business incubation, marketing and consulting. Before joining CityU, Mr Ai was Senior Licensing Associate with the Office of Technology Licensing of Stanford University. A versatile technology entrepreneur, Mr Ai held senior positions in various major corporations and startups. Before working at Stanford, he was Chief Advisor of Hitachi Corporate VC, Executive Vice-President of SUNeVision Ventures, and CEO of WebJK, a company he co-founded. He was also Vice-President of Varian Medical Systems, an NYSE listed company in cancer equipment, Vice-President of Cirque Corporation, and Project Manager of Hewlett-Packard.

He received a Bachelor degree in psychology from the National Taiwan University, an MSc in computer science from Indiana University, an MBA from Stanford University, and a JD from Santa Clara University. Mr Ai is a registered patent attorney in California.

Mr Kwok has been working in the semiconductor industry since 1979, with extensive trend-setting and start-up experiences (at IDT, Quality Semiconductor, PMC-Flash and NetLogic Microsystems), covering business developments, cutting-edge technology developments and applications, IP portfolio developments and licensing, manufacturing operations, as well as product developments and engineering. Mr Kwok played a critical role bringing 2 disruptive technologies mainstream, laying the foundation for the Information Technology Eva: CMOS (as its yield and reliability champion at IDT) for Moore’s Law scalability and Network Search Engine/Knowledge Based Processor (as CIPO/VP Operations at NetLogic Microsystems) for Metcalfe’s Law scalability.

Mr Kwok returned to Hong Kong/PRD in 2002 and has been promoting demand-side application/service platform developments as well as IP and innovation management in China. Mr. Kwok was the co-editor of the first comprehensive “Hanktook of Best Practices in Intellectual Property Management” (in Chinese) published in China.He has a BSES and a MSEE from the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin).

Ms Peggy Cheung (IIPCC HK)

Ms Peggy Cheung's practice focuses on IP portfolio creation and management, conducting IP audits, advising on enforcement and exploitation of IP rights, licensing, and technology transfer matters, and providing IP support on M&A and other commercial transactions.

Ms Cheung has more than 20 years’ experience in managing worldwide trademark and design portfolios and has successfully protected and defended numerous well-known brands for companies based in the U.S., Europe, and Greater China. She has represented numerous Fortune 500 companies in a diverse range of industry sectors including cosmetics, household and personal products, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, fashion and garment companies, and luxury brands, electronics, and telecommunications.

In addition to being a solicitor, Ms Cheung is a registered trade mark attorney before the European Trade Mark Office, the U.K., and Canada. Peggy holds a number of professional and honorary appointments including being the past President and current Council Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners (HKITMP); Councilor of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, Hong Kong Chapter (APAA); Chairman of the organizing committee of the 2009 APAA General Assembly & Annual Meeting; and Honorary Legal Advisor of the Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Medicine, the Sun Chieh Yeh Foundation, the Hong Kong College of Cardiology, and the International Chinese Heart Health Network. Ms Cheung also sits on the panel of the Registration of Persons Tribunal, hearing and adjudicating immigration cases. She is also a member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel of Hong Kong.

Mr Johnson Kong (IIPCC)

Mr Johnson Kong is a board member of the International Intellectual Property Commercialization Council (“IIPCC”), an international non-profit, non- partisan NGO dedicated to IP education, best practices and standards for IP commercialization, based in Hong Kong with Chapters internationally.

Mr Kong was formerly Executive Vice President and head of the Asia at He also held senior executive roles for other IP service entities with global Fortune 500 clients. He is a recognized expert in the formulation and implementation of IP strategies. He has assisted public entities and private multinational companies in creating and implementing robust IP strategies to achieve business goals, such as instituting best practices, overcoming market entry barriers, enhancing product and service margins, creating distribution networks, leveraging partner relationships, increasing corporate valuations and generating licensing revenue. Mr Kong was nominated by peers in the industry and is the recipient of the renowned award, “IAM Strategy 300”, “The World’s Leading IP Strategists” 2014 from Intellectual Asset Management (“IAM”).

Mr Kong has co-chaired and spoken at numerous official premier IP events, such as the Salzburg Global Seminar, IPBC China 2012, IPBC Asia 2013, Business of IP Asia Forum. Mr. Kong is a frequent guest speaker and lecturer at events held by the SIPO, GDIPO, SZSTI, KIPO, TIPO, IPOS and a guest lecturer at universities and R&D centers.
