Safety Guidelines for Outbound Exchange Students

In exchange study, as in many other circumstances, you (students) are the sole or major decision maker on your own health and safety through the decisions you make before and during the student exchange programme and by your day-to-day choices and behaviors. You should:

    ¡¡
  1. Read and carefully consider all materials issued or recommended by your home and host institutions that relate to safety, health, legal, environmental, political, cultural, and religious conditions in the host country.

  2. Consider your physical and mental fitness and other personal circumstances, including reasonable accommodations and financial status to the extent required by law or entry visa, when applying for or accepting a place in the student exchange programme, or before registering for any programmes/activities organized by the host institution.

  3. Make available to your home and host institutions, subject to all applicable legal limitations and restrictions, accurate and complete personal information and any other data that you feel is necessary to plan and facilitate a safe and healthy exchange study experience.

  4. Assume responsibility for all the elements necessary for your personal preparation for the exchange study and attend orientations, before departure and upon arrival.

  5. Obtain suitable and adequate insurance coverage as required by the host and home institutions and abide by any conditions imposed by the insurers.

  6. Inform parents/families, and any others who may need to know, about your participation in the student exchange programme, provide them with emergency contact information, and keep in contact with them on a regular basis.

  7. Understand and comply with the terms of participation (you have signed the Student¡¯s Undertaking when accepting the offer of the CityU Student Exchange Programme), codes of conduct, and emergency procedures when a critical incident arises.

  8. Be aware of local conditions (weather, landscapes) and customs (food, dieting behaviours) that may have impact on your health or safety when making daily choices and decisions. Promptly and politely express any health or safety concerns to the host, event/activity organizer or other appropriate individuals before and/or during the event/activity.

  9. Behave in a manner that is respectful of the rights and wellbeing of others, and encourage others to behave in a similar manner.

  10. Be responsible for your own decisions and actions.

  11. Obey host country laws and be respectful of local customs.

  12. Become familiar with the procedures for getting access to emergency health and law enforcement services in the host country.

  13. Keep the programme staff at the host institution (e.g. your host department, international student office) informed of your whereabouts and wellbeing.

  14. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol.

  15. Avoid illegal drugs.
