Gestures of Negation in Chinese: Identifying Forms, Linguistic Organization, and Discourse Functions
This project will operationalize a video recorded corpus of spoken Chinese in order to identify and describe gestural expressions of negation. Identifying and describing gestural expressions of negation has become an important area of gesture studies research in support of multimodal and embodied theories of grammar. Studies of negation gestures are now well-documented in a range of languages, but not Chinese. Identifying the forms, linguistic organization, and discourse functions of gestures associated with negation in Chinese will fill this empirical gap and provide the basis for future comparative studies of linguistic multimodality. The appointee will be joining a growing network of students, academics, and researchers who work in areas relating to gesture studies in Hong Kong and the wider region. The main duties will include:
A Master’s degree with 1 year’s post-qualification working experience relevant to the project. Proficiency in spoken and written Chinese (including Putonghua). Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative methods of corpus analysis and gesture studies/multimodal interaction are highly desirable, as is knowledge of linguistic and pragmatic negation in spoken Chinese.
