Improving Pig Health and Production in Hong Kong

The overall aim of the Project is to improve pig health and production in individual pig farms while enhancing the economic and environmental sustainability of pig farming in Hong Kong, for the benefit of individual farmers as well as society in general.  The objectives are to identify the constraints to achieving higher pig health and productivity in Hong Kong; and develop interventions to improve pig productivity, health and welfare, as well as food safety, economic and environmental sustainability.


Duties

  1. Provide support to the project team and swine veterinarians for the production and health management programme for pigs farm clients in Hong Kong;
  2. Assist in demonstration and training for farm workers, collection of environment samples for biosecurity enhancement and collection of production data for building customer profile;
  3. Manage the technical equipment, and associated system/consumable and inventory control;
  4. Contribute to Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine education provided by the University;
  5. Assist in preparation of education materials for farmers; and
  6. Perform any other duties as assigned.


Shift duty and working on Saturday, Sunday/public holidays may be required.

Requirements

A good honours degree/Higher Diploma/Higher Certificate in Animal Science/Science or related disciplines, with at least 2 years’ working experience in related fields.  Holder of a valid Hong Kong driving license (Class 1 and 2) and fluency in English and Cantonese (preferably in Putonghua) are also required.  Experience in handling and management of farm animals (especially pigs) is desirable. Experience in commercial clinic set-up/laboratory work associated with animals (including support for teaching and research) would be an advantage.

Candidates with lower qualifications or less experience may be considered for appointment at the rank of Junior Technician.

Successful candidates may be considered for appointment on a full-time or part-time basis.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits for full-time appointment include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
