Farm Manager (at the rank of Assistant Registrar) in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health [Ref. C/519/09]

 

The Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health (PH) is establishing a small dairy farm of Jersey cows in Hong Kong. This is a unique project which is expected to bring multiple benefits to Hong Kong. The manager of this farm is expected to take a leading role in developing this small but high profile farm and its relations with the Hong Kong society. 

Duties

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a dairy farm and other farm related facilities. Main duties include to:

  1. Manage all aspects of the University dairy farm efficiently with high standards of animal welfare;
  2. Assist in representing PH’s interests in the negotiations concerning the Dairy Farm project;
  3. Assist in the procurement process of the equipment for the dairy farm provided by both local and international suppliers;
  4. Maintain the integrity and biosecurity of the farm;
  5. Maintain relevant records and data planning for the dairy project;
  6. Direct the service and support in carrying out day-to-day operations, and conduct animal husbandry works with dairy cattle and other farm animals;
  7. Provide support in departmental activities;
  8. Enforce the workplace safety in dairy farm environment in accordance with standard set by PH;
  9. Maintain contacts and understanding of local and Mainland China farms, NGOs, and livestock unit holders; and
  10. Perform any other assignments.


Shift duty and working on Sundays and public holidays will be required.

Requirements

A degree preferably in Veterinary Medicine, with solid experience in dairy veterinary medicine and in the management of a dairy farm.  An Animal Science degree with several years of experience in managing dairy farms would also be considered.  The ability to communicate in Cantonese and/or Mandarin would be an advantage.  A degree recognized by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong (VSB) for registration as a veterinary surgeon is not an essential requirement but would be an advantage.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical, dental schemes and housing benefits (where applicable).
