Project

Improving Poultry Health and Production in Hong Kong

The overall aim of the Project is to improve poultry health and production in individual poultry farms, while enhancing the economic and environmental sustainability of poultry farming in Hong Kong, for the benefit of individual farmers as well as society in general. The objectives are to identify the constraints to achieve higher poultry health and production in Hong Kong; and develop interventions to improve poultry productivity, health and welfare, as well as food safety, economic and environmental sustainability.

Duties

  1. Develop production and health management programme for poultry farm clients in Hong Kong
  2. Provide production and health management service to poultry farm clients in Hong Kong (including visits to local poultry farms, assessment of production and health condition of poultry farms, performing disease diagnoses, and providing recommendations for disease prevention and control);
  3. Provide training and supervise veterinary assistants;
  4. Maintain poultry veterinary practice records, and work with farmers to produce farm level electronic records on poultry health and production;
  5. Conduct research in poultry health and production relevant to Hong Kong poultry farms;
  6. Contribute to Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine education provided by the University; and
  7. Perform any other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

Qualifications
A DVM or equivalent from a HKVSB recognized institution is required.  For post (1), poultry medicine specialist qualification is also required. Proficiency in Cantonese and Putonghua is desirable.  For post (2), holder of a valid Hong Kong driving license (Class 1 and 2) and proficiency in Cantonese are also required. Proficiency in Putonghua is desirable.

Work experience
For post (1), at least 5 years' experience as poultry practitioner; experience in commercial poultry production on husbandry, genetics, nutrition, economics, supply chain and market requirements; and practical experience in the management of major poultry production-limiting diseases (including on-farm disease outbreak investigation involving gross-pathology/PM diagnosis/serology/sampling as well as health record analysis) are required.  For post (2), at least 2 years' experience in veterinary practice or any other relevant industry is required. For posts (1) and (2), experience in commercial clinic set-up (including in-house lab and pharmacy, and electronic record systems) is desirable.

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to communicate directly with veterinarians, farmers and students;
  2. Ability to work with individuals from different disciplines;
  3. Excellent supervisory, multi-tasking, organizational and problem solving skills, with ability to evaluate new processes, implement plans, and develop preventive/corrective actions;
  4. Cultural sensitivity and resilience to overcome initial resistance to changes/perception challenges and foster a cooperative approach; and
  5. Ability to work along with translator across cultural barriers with farmers accustomed to low veterinary input.


Successful candidates may be considered for appointment on a full-time or part-time basis.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits for full-time appointment include gratuity, leave, medical, dental schemes and housing benefits (where applicable).
