Farm Manager in the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences [Ref. C/611/09]

 

The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCC) is establishing a small dairy teaching farm in Hong Kong.  This unique project will bring multiple benefits to Hong Kong.  The appointee is expected to take a leading role in developing this small but high profile farm and its relations with Hong Kong society.

Duties

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the dairy farm and other farm related facilities.  Main duties include to:

  1. Manage all aspects of the dairy farm efficiently with high standards of animal welfare;
  2. Assist in advocating the University’s interests in the negotiations concerning the construction of and commercial licensing of the dairy farm;
  3. Assist in the procurement process of the equipment for the dairy farm provided by both local and international suppliers;
  4. Maintain the integrity and biosecurity of the farm in accordance with best-practice;
  5. Oversee and maintain relevant records, data planning and data input;
  6. Manage and direct daily operations and usage of the farm, dairy cattle and other farm animals in the activities under the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine Programme including husbandry and extramural studies and in other University activities;
  7. Provide support for the University and JCC’s educational and research activities;
  8. Enforce workplace safety in dairy farm environment in accordance with standards set by JCC and standards required for acquisition of and maintenance of a commercial dairy farm license;
  9. Build and maintain working relationships with local and Mainland China farms, NGOs, and livestock unit holders; and
  10. Perform any other assignments.


Shift duty and working on Sundays and public holidays will be required.


Requirements

A degree preferably in Veterinary Medicine, with solid experience in dairy veterinary medicine and dairy farm management.  An Animal Science degree with several years of experience in managing dairy farms would also be considered.  The ability to communicate in Cantonese and/or Mandarin and a degree recognized by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong (VSB) for registration as a veterinary surgeon would be an advantage.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
