Technology Development Manager (Innopreneurship) in the Knowledge Transfer Office [Ref. B/433/09]

 


Duties

The appointee will support innovation and enable innopreneurship, and work with colleagues of diverse skills as well as with researchers, students and alumni to create and deliver value of their research outcomes or initial start-up concepts through a comprehensive set of CityU programmes.  Main duties include to :

  1. Take overall responsibility in driving innopreneurship in CityU;
  2. Work with Director of Knowledge Transfer Office to develop Innovation Programmes proprietary to CityU, lead implementation, conduct each run of such innovation programme(s), as precursor to develop a research outcome into a viable technology on which a sustainable business can be launched, regardless of technological field;
  3. Orchestrate interdisciplinary groups of a variety of expertise to form teams to champion the evolution of application concepts culminating into actual businesses to spin off from CityU;
  4. Work with Technology/Project Development and/or Technology Transfer Managers/Officers on value chain position of a probable technology where sustainable businesses bring value to industry;
  5. Coach project teams in their pitch for their business concepts at/to: networking events, business plan competitions, accelerators, angels, incubators, investors;
  6. Build a mentor network to connect Innopreneurs with mentors that supports Innovation Programmes and beyond; and
  7. Facilitate access to various public/private funding programmes for spin-offs/start-ups.



Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (e.g., EE/EEE; ICT)/Life Science/Material Science or any combination of these fields, with not less than 10 years’ relevant experience;
  2. Ability to orchestrate/moderate/lead discussions with an audience of diverse interest, multi-disciplinary background;
  3. Strong network of accelerators, angles, incubators, investors, venture capital, etc. that enables university spin-offs to find opportunities and resources to operationalize real businesses;
  4. Good organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as strong command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua);
  5. Ability to work within and across a team of different functions and expertise;
  6. Strong team player that enables progress towards business formation based on technological projects; and
  7. Experience in or familiarity with patent and copyright laws, venture investment, incubation programmes, facilitation of collaborative teamwork spaces, start-up, financial analysis, and possession of good skills in approaching and wooing investors would be an advantage.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
