IT Support Manager (at the rank of Computer Officer) in the Library [Ref. B/225/09]

 

The Library is seeking for an energetic, experienced and strategic professional with proven leadership to manage and develop the IT help services in support of the teaching, learning and research activities of the University community in a dynamic academic environment.

Duties

Playing a vital role in planning, developing and managing the IT facilities and support services in the Library, the appointee will be responsible for managing and developing the makerspace and virtual reality facilities as well as identifying opportunities to integrate emerging technologies into Library services.  Main duties include to:

  1. Provide advice and contribute to the Library’s long-term strategic planning of IT development as well as to devise relevant policies and procedures of IT provision in the Library;
  2. Lead a group of technical and support staff in the Technical Service & Support (TSS) Section to provide support services on IT-related facilities, audio visual equipment, the CCTV system, the AV control system, self-service equipment, printers and copiers;
  3. Oversee the operation of IT Help Desk and Information Space Counter as well as manage Special Equipment Room, Group Study Rooms and Mini Theatre;
  4. Work with Library staff at all levels and analyse their IT requirements; propose, develop and implement effective IT solutions;
  5. Perform planning, budgeting, evaluation and procurement of IT-related facilities and equipment for the Library;
  6. Administer the Library website and contribute substantially in Library website design and enhancement;
  7. Work with the School of Creative Media in developing the makerspace CREATE!; serve as the service coordinator of CREATE!; plan and oversee the service and operation of CREATE!
  8. Plan, develop and manage the operation of the VR services, CAVE and LibCompass wayfinding systems;
  9. Work closely with Central IT in the administration and planning of the IT infrastructure and security in support of Library applications;
  10. Lead or participate in IT-related projects within or beyond the Library;
  11. Respond to user feedback, suggestions and complaints on all IT-related issues; plan and implement service enhancement;
  12. Keep abreast of IT development and the emerging library trends, standards, applications, and knowledge systems for providing advice to the Library in its future development that meets and anticipates users’ needs;
  13. Participate in Library committees and working groups as well as represent the Library in the JULAC Committee of Media and task forces where necessary;
  14. Perform shift duty on weekday evenings and weekends as required; and
  15. Perform any other assignments.


Requirements

  1. A good honours degree in Computer Science/Information Technology or related disciplines;
  2. Substantial working experience in IT support services, systems development and management or related responsibilities, preferably in an academic library setting;
  3. Demonstrated experience in web-based development and software integration (e.g. using REST APIs, and JSON or XML for data interoperability);
  4. Working knowledge of programming languages, web application technologies (e.g. Java, PHP, Ruby, CSS, Javascript, HTML/XML), web content development tools and emerging web technologies in academic libraries;
  5. Demonstrated understanding of client/server environments, and working experience in Microsoft Windows Server, UNIX/Linux, Oracle/SQL Server;
  6. Excellent problem solving, analytical, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  7. Self-motivation and capability to work independently and within a team environment;
  8. Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese;
  9. Working experience with virtual reality and new educational technologies would be an advantage; and experience in ITIL and project management is a plus.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
