Assistant Safety Manager (Laboratory) (at the rank of Chief Technical Officer) (1 post)/Senior Safety Officer (Laboratory) (at the rank of Senior Technical Officer) (2 posts) in the Facilities Management Office [Ref. A/292/09]

 

Duties

Reporting to the Senior Safety and Administration Manager, the appointees will work with laboratory personnel to integrate safety into laboratory operations and promote safe work practices based on regulatory requirements, management guidance and university polices.

Main duties include to:

  1. Assist in performing risk assessments and make recommendations on appropriate laboratory safety practices;
  2. Conduct regular inspections, spot checks, compliance audits and hazard assessments of research laboratories, teaching laboratories, research animal facilities and other supporting facilities;
  3. Set up and manage online systems for chemical purchasing, inventory and waste disposal;
  4. Manage all laboratory safety-related documentation, prepare timely reports, and monitor remedial actions when necessary;
  5. Advise on research safety approval applications, laboratory design and safety management, and conduct pre-occupation safety checks;
  6. Prepare and conduct related training and maintain records;
  7. Formulate and update laboratory safety-related guidelines in line with current legislation and/or international practices;
  8. Assist in emergency response to laboratory-related accidents or general incidents and carry out investigations;
  9. Maintain strong collaborative relationship with Principal Investigators, researchers and departmental administrators to promote a culture of safety; and
  10. Perform any other assignments.

 

Requirements

  1. A good honours degree, preferably with a Master’s degree, in Chemistry/Biology/Microbiology/Occupational Health and Safety, Occupational Hygiene or related disciplines;
  2. At least 8 years' solid and post-qualification administrative experience at supervisory level, preferably in tertiary institutions and in laboratory environment;
  3. Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua), good communication and interpersonal skills;
  4. Excellent quantitative, analytical and computer skills; and
  5. Ability to work outside office hours, under pressure and independently.


Candidates with less experience may be considered for appointment as Senior Safety Officer (Laboratory).

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
