Professor/Associate Professor (Interactive and Immersive Media) in the School of Creative Media [Ref. E/187/09]

The School of Creative Media (SCM) is recruiting academic faculty within its broad scope of creative endeavors.  Led by Dean Professor Richard Allen, SCM is the leading media school in Hong Kong and the foremost advocate and incubator of new media and creative arts in Asia.  We have an international faculty of world renown for their creative endeavours.

Centre for Applied Computing and Interactive Media (ACIM)

Under the directorship of Professor Jeffrey Shaw, SCM has established a world leading facility in ACIM.  This facility is equipped with some of the most advanced technologies in the field, including a CAVE, a 28-camera Motion Analysis motion capture studio, a 10m diameter 360-degree 3D projection environment, a 6m diameter dome projection system, panoramic photographic and video cameras, ambisonic sound recording, various augmented and mixed reality systems, etc.  Working closely with the Dean of SCM, the candidate in immersive media is expected to play an important role in the future development of this research centre and, depending upon qualifications and experience, assume leadership of ACIM.

 

Duties

The appointee is expected to 1) teach on both undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums and advise postgraduate research students; 2) play an active role in curriculum development, management, and design; 3) maintain an active research and practice profile with a focus on contemporary and future development and applications of immersive media; 4) provide service to School and University governance; and 5) contribute to professional engagement, networking, and outreach activities in immersive media that enhance the academic and professional life of the School.

 

Requirements

A PhD in Interactive Media, Digital Media, or related disciplines.  Candidates should ideally have:

  • A record of research scholarship and publication;
  • A high level of artistic and technical achievement in the field of Immersive Media, with A/A+ exhibitions and international recognition/awards;
  • A track record to demonstrate ability to take a leadership role in what is one of SCM’s core areas of learning and research;
  • A record of university teaching with experience in curriculum development, interdisciplinary programs, and postgraduate supervision;
  • Thorough knowledge of the history, theory, and practice of immersive media;
  • Coherent vision for the development of Immersive Media at the leading edge of creativity in art society and industry;
  • In-depth understanding and technical grasp of the hardware and software technologies that underlie current and future development of Immersive Media; and
  • Successful track record of industry collaboration.


We offer teaching loads commensurate with the requirements of a research university, start-up research grants (for substantiation-track appointees) and ample opportunities for professional development.  Candidates with interdisciplinary research and teaching interests are especially welcome.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and individual performance.  Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable).  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
