Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (English Literary and Cultural Studies) in the Department of English [Ref. B/403/09]

The Department of English is a leading centre for English studies in the Asian region, and has an international reputation for its research on English language and literature, creative writing and professional communication. City University of Hong Kong is ranked among the top 100 universities for English Language and Literature globally, and the Department is entering an exciting new phase.

Duties

The appointee will work in one of the areas described above, and is expected to conduct quality research, teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, develop curriculum, supervise students, and undertake administrative and service-related activities.

Requirements

The Department is particularly interested in applicants with expertise in the following areas:

1) world literature in English; postcolonial literature; literature of the Asian diaspora; 2) modern or contemporary British or American literature.  Applicants would ideally have experience in teaching or coordinating survey courses.

A PhD in English or a related discipline.  Candidates for Professor should be leaders in the field with the capacity to produce high quality scholarly output, design innovative courses, mentor younger staff, and to contribute to the Department’s administration.  Candidates for Associate Professor should be experienced mid-career scholars with established research agendas and substantial experience in teaching and course development.  Candidates for Assistant Professor should have a solid track record in research and teaching, or otherwise demonstrate a strong potential.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and individual performance.  Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable).  Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
