Director Message

Welcome to Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy (HKICE)!

As the founding director, it is my pleasure to work alongside an extraordinary team of faculty and staff in designing, launching, and developing HKICE at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

HKICE aims at pursuing highly interdisciplinary and collaborative initiatives to drive innovative clean energy solutions for tackling challenges to global net-zero carbon emissions. Our determination and vision manifested in HKICE’s plan are grounded on six pillars: energy generation, energy storage, energy-saving, energy distribution, smart city, and energy analysis and policy. HKICE will be a nexus for all the industry and government leaders, stakeholders, researchers, and academic experts to collaborate for transforming the future of clean energy, from the local to the global scales. Housing world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research laboratories and infrastructure, HKICE aspires to become the foremost leader in clean energy in Hong Kong and beyond.

HKICE is a University-level Institute founded on the collective expertise of the CityU to advance the development of new energy-related technologies and foster new connections between exciting energy research areas across borders and sectors.

We provide our expertise to industry, NGOs, and government leaders to develop better pathways to sustainable solutions and innovative practices on policy, regulation, and environmental protection. We host energy-themed seminars and conferences as an open-access platform to facilitate knowledge exchange and advocate transdisciplinary collaborations to accelerate clean energy innovations. Also, we are committed to developing outreach efforts for youth and the community, cultivating their depth of understanding needed to make a positive difference in the world. We believe the joint efforts will take us to the next level of growth, sustainability, and resilience.

HKICE is leading a growing movement to involve post-doctoral scholars and Ph.D. students in the highest levels of academic engagement and provide them with an immersive learning and dynamic research environment. Through our integrated research, education, and outreach programs, we will help shape our brightest future innovators and leaders to explore new clean energy directions and enhance their professional skills to facilitate their future engagement in clean energy-related technology and business development.

It’s time to transition to cleaner energy infrastructure. Working together, the possibility of living in a zero-carbon future will become more than just a dream! I am excited to be a part of this mission and hope you will join HKICE in its efforts.

On behalf of the HKICE team, we greatly appreciate your interest in our work. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about the many opportunities for engaging in our research, training, programs, and other forms of collaboration.
