The Housing Department today (Thursday) appealed to public housing estate tenants not to leave unwanted furniture or garbage in the passage or other common areas inside their block to avoid creating serious fire hazards. This follows a fire which broke out at Shek Yam Estate in Kwai Chung yesterday morning where piles of garbage discarded by tenants moving out of the estate caught fire. "It is particularly important that tenants who are moving in or moving out should dispose of their unwanted items properly at their nearby refuse collection points," said a spokesman for the Department. "They should never leave any garbage on the passages to block the fire exits within the building," he added. As regards yesterday's fire at Shek Yam which is due for demolition, the spokesman said the estate office had put up notices before the fire at conspicuous positions in each block calling on tenants to dispose of their garbage properly. "In addition, the estate office has arranged with the cleansing contractor for extra workmen to remove any garbage left behind inside the buildings, and with the Regional Services Department for speedier removal of garbage from the estate," he noted. "However, we need the full co-operation of the tenants in keeping their estate safe and clean, especially when a large number of tenants are on the move at about the same time," he said.
