Headline : Good progress in rehousing of Tiu Keng Leng cottage residents
Content : The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority :

A large number of families living in Tiu Keng Leng Cottage Area who have been offered rehousing will soon move into their new homes in Hau Tak Estate in Tseung Kwan O New Town.

"If the current good progress in rehousing is maintained, we can start the clearance in early 1996 to make available the land for housing and Tseung Kwan O New Town development," said Assistant Director of Housing, Mr Lau Kai-hung.

Of the 1,059 families which have been screened to be eligible for public rental housing, 820 or about 80 per cent have been or will be given rehousing offers by the end of October. So far, over half of those families who have received rehousing offers have accepted them. The acceptance rate is expected to increase gradually.

In addition, 157 families have successfully bought Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) flats in the late HOS sales exercise, and 177 families are eligible for Temporary Housing Area units.

"We expect that many more families will move into their new homes in Hau Tak Estate or HOS falts by the end of this year," he said.

"Staff of the Housing Department will continue to make rehousing offers to the remaining 504 families," he said.

The rehousing offers, together with a special ex-gratia allowance at the rate of $7,000 per square metre, and an enhanced domestic removal allowance form a special clearance package for the Tiu Keng Leng Cottage Area residents.

Meanwhile, essential public and community facilities provided by the Police, the Fire Services Department, the Post Office and some voluntary organisations will continue to be maintained.
