The Director of Housing, Mr Fung Tung, today (Thursday) presented a commendation letter to an estate assistant whose brave act in an gas explosion has gained public admiration.

The recipient, Mr Yuen Moon-chee, aged 45, works as an estate assistant in Nam Cheong Estate.

In the morning of August 19 this year, a gas explosion occurred in a unit of the estate. After arrival at the scene, Mr Yuen found two old ladies aged 71 and 93 in the nearby units. He immediately carried them on his back one by one to a safe place before the arrival of the firemen.

At a presentation ceremony today, Mr Fung praised him for responding promptly to the urgent need of tenants and enhancing the image of the Department.

He said Mr Yuen's brave act had not only gained the admiration of the tenants, but had also set a good example for his colleagues.

Meanwhile, an Assistant Housing Manager, Mr Siu Kwok- chi of Upper Ngau Tau Kok Estate, and a foreman, Mr Liu Tak- keung of Yau Oi Estate, were also commended for assisting the Police in fighting crime.

Mr Siu helped the Police in an operation against street gambling while Mr Liu's brave act led to the arrest of a shoplifter.

At today's ceremony, a total of 115 housing staff who have each served the government for 30 years or more were also presented the Long and Meritorious Services Certificate in appreciation of their good service and contribution in the past years.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Fung, praised the unceasing efforts and loyalty of the recipients in providing the highest quality of services even in adverse situation.
