In addition to offering professionally oriented programmes in diverse disciplines such as science, engineering, business and law, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) places great emphasis on cultivating cultural awareness and the personal growth of its students. University education includes nurturing students' spirits to enable them to graduate not only as competent professionals but also as well-rounded people who possess a cultural dimension. It is only through nurturing graduates who will contribute to the well-being of society that a university can fulfill its role and responsibility.

In order to imbue students with a sense of culture, we need to cultivate their interest in art and appreciation of beauty. It takes time to realize the impact of art on a person. The environment in which one grows up is also critical. The famous story of the mother of Mencius who moved three times to find the most conducive environment for her son illustrates the important of environment to one's development. Two ancient Chinese sayings, "Red ink stains one red, and black ink stains one block" and "Fleabance grows straight amidst flax", underline the influence of environment on young people.

Cai Yuanpei, a renowed educator and advocate of aesthetic development, proposed that in addition to pursuing professional knowledge, young people should develop good character through the recognition and appreciation of art. This is inspiring for us educationalists.

CityU will realize that besides emphasizing professional education and applied research, the University also has an artistic and humanistic spirit.
