The
English Language Mentoring Scheme (ELMS) aims to help students develop
their English communication skills in a social setting. Active
participation should enable students to interact in a range of
situations.
Groups of ELMS members
participate in a variety of social activities with mentors, who are
CityU staff members and exchange students. Each group devises
activities which give opportunities to practise English in a social
context, for example, sharing or cooking meals, playing sports,
sightseeing, hiking or watching films.
ELMS activities are not English lessons and participants do not get feedback on their English.
The scheme provides students with an opportunity to:
Communicate in English outside of the classroom
Improve their English competence
Meet people from different backgrounds
Make new friends in the University
Participants learn to:
Discuss a variety of issues in social situations
Express their opinions
Describe their experiences
Respond appropriately in conversations
Use a wide range of vocabulary in social situations
Registration
for the ELMS opens in Week 2 of each semester. Students who join the
scheme in Semester A get priority when registering again in Semester B.
Students with comments or suggestions for the scheme can contact the ELMS Coordinator,
Jim King. |
