The
Self-Access Centre provides a range of computer assisted language
learning (CALL) programmes. Any CityU student can use the programmes in
the SAC or the Language Lounge.
Details of
the programmes and how to use them can be found near the computers in the SAC.
Student helpers are often available to assist or offer tips on using
various programmes.

Business English provides examples, exercises and detailed explanations to help users practise reading, speaking, listening and writing
Business English Meetings, set around a video that follows a merger between two companies, helps users learn useful language
Business Simulation lets users choose roles and activities based on real organizational problems, procedures and management research
Cinemania provides articles and lectures on Hollywood films
Clear Speech Works lets users listen to speech samples and practise them
Connected Speech provides exercises to help users to speak well and improve their pronunciation
EASE stands
for Essential Academic Skills in English and consists of sections on
listening to lectures, making presentations and participating in
discussions
Eighteen Stories provides exercises that users can do after listening to stories
English Grammar in Use,
designed to accompany the third edition of a popular grammar book,
provides practice activities to support the explanations and exercises
in the book
Error Terror tests users’ ability to identify errors in sentences at different levels of difficulty
Gapmaster 2.0 covers grammar topics and allows users to test their ability to fill in gaps with the correct answers
LANGMaster Interactive English,
available at elementary and intermediate levels, provides listening
exercises and a linked-in dictionary on a CD-ROM that can be borrowed
from the SAC counter
MindGame, similar to tic tac toe, tests users’ abilities in different areas of English and offers a choice of learning modes
Movie Talk offers a variety of exercises based on an episode of Inspector Morse, a British TV detective series
Pronunciation & Speech Tutor provides speaking lessons and speech analysis
Pronunciation Power helps users learn and practise difficult sounds in English through lessons, exercises, a dictionary and games
Reactions! provides a variety of texts to improve reading skills, as well as discussion skills, listening comprehension and writing
Report Writer shows how an academic report should be structured through sample reports and advice
Road to IELTS, written by British Council IELTS examiners and examiner trainers, provides a complete programme of IELTS preparation, also available online
Sky Pronunciation Suite and Sky Pronunciation Suite 2 help users practise key areas of pronunciation
StageStruck, an interactive theatre game, allows users to create stage sets, sound, scripts and performances
Storyboard lets users read or listen to stories and fill in the text
Streaming Speech presents fast speech by expert speakers of English to familiarize users with the sounds of English
STUDY SKILLS Success helps students practise reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, visuals, grammar and vocabulary
Ten Interactive English Lessons and Ten More Interactive English Lessons each provide 10 lessons on listening, reading and writing
Tense Buster provides presentations, rules and practice activities in elementary to advanced areas of grammar
Testmaster provides vocabulary and grammar quizzes and a range of possible answers
