CityU
is committed to ongoing appraisal through a performance management
system that provides professional development and planning
opportunities for all ELC staff.
All staff
are assessed on an annual basis. Full-time staff are usually appraised
in Semester A and part-time staff in Semester B. The system for
part-time staff is simpler than that for full-time staff.
Appraisals are used to inform future employment decisions:
Contract renewal and award of salary increments for full-time staff
Contract renewal and number of hours offered to part-time staff
The performance management system is based on:
Clear specification of what is required of staff
The collection of evidence of performance
Support for continuous professional development
Final appraisals based on initial self-assessments by staff
Clear specification of what is required is achieved through descriptions of jobs and areas of responsibility for teaching staff, evaluation criteria for full-time and part-time staff, and agreed job plans for all full-time staff.
All requirements flow from the ELC mission and teaching philosophy.
Full-time staff must submit an annual self-report supported by a portfolio as evidence of performance. The self-report must include a professional development plan.
The
evidence collected for part-time staff consists of an observation
rating by a senior staff member, teaching feedback questionnaire
results, and reports on whether course administration has been
completed in an accurate and timely way.
Both full- and part-time staff are expected to take advantage of professional development
opportunities and to participate in the peer observation system, which
involves observing and being observed once each year by a peer.
Appraisals for full-time staff are based on their self-assessment in their annual self-report. Part-time staff complete a self-assessment using a performance rating chart.
After a discussion between the appraiser and the person being
appraised, the appraiser writes an assessment using the same format as
the self-assessment. The staff member has a chance to comment before signing. |
