Positions in the Department
The department employs staff in a number of positions.

Full-time Positions Part-time Positions
Instructors  Lecturer
Instructor IIs Student Helpers

Instructors
Instructors teach around 20 hours a week on our regular credit bearing courses.  They also take on an administrative role such as coordinating a course, an assessment or co-curricular activity or they may manage  part-time teachers or student helpers.  In addition, they serve on committees such as ‘Staff Development’ or ‘Quality Assurance’.  They can also be involved in projects from materials development to running newsletters.

Instructor IIs
Instructor IIs teach 10 to 12 hours a week on our regular credit bearing courses and 8 to 10 hours running our co-curricular activities.  Instructor IIs are employed to expose the local students to people of a similar age group but different cultural backgrounds .

Here’s what our Instructor IIs have said about the job ….

Allan, from the USA, 2009.  “The best thing about being an Instructor II is that I get to experience teaching in Hong Kong, a place unfamiliar to my home.  I get to meet people, network with other teachers, and learn about the educational system in Hong Kong as well as travel and live in a foreign city.”

Liam, from England, 2009.  “The position provides a great opportunity to gain experience teaching at tertiary level, something most people at an early stage in their teaching careers don't get.  Also, the department is full of experienced teachers with lots of advice and tips. “

Jade, from the USA, 2009.  “As an Instructor II, I have been fortunate to interact with many students and witness their growth and development regarding the use of English as a second language. Being an educator is indeed one of the most difficult jobs, but quite rewarding. It has been a positive and enlightening experience being an Instructor II in the ELC!”

Part-time Lecturers
Part-time Lecturers can teach up to 17 hours a week on our regular credit bearing courses.  They also take part in exam assessment.
