University English Courses
(for Bachelor's Degree Students)

 

CityU's English Language Requirement | FAQ


 

The aim of the University English courses is to enhance the English communication skills of Bachelor’s Degree students. Students will take six credits of University English courses, 3 credits from core and 3 credits from electives, totaling 180 hours of study.

Core courses

All students must pass two core courses. These are:

Each of these courses includes an independent study component, where students plan an individualized language study programme under the guidance of the class teacher.

In addition to the two core courses, you must also take three credits chosen from the ELC elective courses.

Note: Failure to pass the University English Courses may result in you not being able to graduate from the University. Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure that you complete the courses in good time.


Elective courses

If you are required to take ELC courses in order to satisfy the English Attainment Requirement, you must take a total of 6 credits of courses, including three credits from the core courses. The remaining three credits should be selected from the following elective courses, bearing in mind the restrictions and recommendations outlined below.

Restrictions or Recommendations:

Students are recommended to have completed both core courses before they take any elective course.

Students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering may not take EL0405 or EL0406.

EL0407 is open only to eligible 1st year students of the Department of Physics and Materials Science and the Department of Electronic Engineering in a specific semester arranged by the students' Departments.

EL0404 should not be taken until you have completed at least one of the core courses. This course requires 100% attendance.

You are advised not to take EL0405 until you have completed EL0224 or equivalent ELC course.


Teaching Materials

The ELC uses in-house materials, occasionally supplemented by textbooks.
