December 2008 Seminar

 

Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s experience of implementing the eportfolio

 

Juliana Chau of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University  presented a focus on the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of the ePortfolio project at the English Language Centre of the PolyU. The ‘what’ examines main features of the ePortfolio system and perceptions of teachers and students of the ePortfolio based on questionnaire surveys and interviews. The ‘how’ includes the ePortfolio concept and implementation process model adopted by the PolyU. Key issues arising from the project will also be discussed.

On this occasion and following the input from City U and Poly U on ePortfolios HASALD organised and open discussion on the issue.

 

February 2009 Seminar

The seminar will be led by Nick Florent from the ELC at Poly U. The topic will be ‘Motivating student to study independently’. The outline is below.

Motivating students to study independently.

 

The ELC has tried various means to encourage students to study independently, including both optional and compulsory independent learning components in courses, certificates for completing a number of hours of independent study and competitions.

In March Lindsay Miller gave talk at British Council in celebration of  the 425th Anniversary of Cambridge University Press.

April 2009 Seminar

In this session Sue Chang and Mark Hopkins will explain the principles and procedures behind a few of the activities for independent language practice that we have organized over the past few years, with special reference to the (in)famous English Conversation Group (ECG) and a new range of student-led activities. Contextualization (the changing roles and perceptions of the SAC) as well as some user reactions to these activities will also be presented, and comments from HASALD members with experience of organizing similar activities will be greatly appreciated.
