Dr Paula Hodgson is a doctoral graduate of the University of South Australia who has been working in higher education since 1997. Enthusiastic about innovative practices in teaching and research, she worked in the Educational Development Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for almost ten years before joining the Centre for Professional Development in the University of Auckland (New Zealand). Her research interests are in the pedagogical applications of learning technologies in conventional and blended online teaching in universities, and their evaluation. Her work has involved a number of projects funded by Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee, including Action Learning Project, Megaweb and e3Learning. In 2008, she put her educational theories to use when she taught in the University of Hong Kong, where her research focused on the blended mode of learning and assessment experiences for first-year university study. She places high value on a learning-centred approach to teaching and on engaging learners in a way that challenges their preconceived ideas in achieving both intended and unintended learning outcomes. She received an approval rating of over 90 percent from her students in a teaching feedback questionnaire relating to teaching effectiveness.

Expertise

Dr Hodgson is an ongoing reviewer for Computers and Education, Education Research International, the World Conference on Educational Media and Technology (EDMEDIA), and the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) conference. As an advocate for a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods in educational research, she has co-instigated a variety of innovative teaching and learning practices with academics over the years. This includes online orientation and simulated laboratory practice for nursing students, building professional journalistic skills through using blogs for student journalists, developing higher-order thinking skills through online case discussions, and improving statistical knowledge through online quizzes as a type of formative assessment.
