The term ' Constructive' relates to theories about how students construct knowledge and is based on the notion of ' Constructivism'. This is based on the idea that we make sense of the world around us and attribute meaning not through direct instruction or having knowledge imposed upon us, but by our daily interactions with our environment. Adapting to new challenges from our environment forces us to organise our knowledge and formulate new meanings for ourselves. This is seen as a natural process common to all species and is survival based. Therefore, our ' knowledge' is gradually constructed and elaborated as an ongoing process which allows us to attribute meaning to things we might not otherwise understand.
