What is GE?

The Goal of GE

The goal of Gateway Education (GE) is to give you a broad sampling of different academic areas. This sampling exposes you to varied disciplines, increasing the value and breadth of your total undergraduate education. GE allows you to discover new interests that may open a whole new range of opportunities for further study or career choice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of GE

The Senate at its meeting on 3 November 2009 approved the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) of the Gateway Education programme.

The revised GE ILOs are:

  1. Demonstrate the capacity for self-directed learning
  2. Explain the basic methodologies and techniques of inquiry of the arts and humanities, social sciences, business, and science and technology
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking skills
  4. Interpret information and numerical data
  5. Produce structured, well-organised, and fluent text
  6. Demonstrate effective oral communication skills
  7. Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a team
  8. Recognise important characteristics of their own culture(s) and at least one other culture, and their impact on global issues
  9. Value ethical and socially responsible actions

The GE Programme is an integral part of the 4-year degree curriculum designed for students to achieve the graduate outcomes for 2016 and beyond.
