DEC-OBTL Implementation Workshop Series
EDGE coordinates a series of workshops to support colleges, schools and departments in their implementation of the Discovery-Enriched Curriculum under the OBTL framework. These workshops will be the first steps to help faculty to define the content, intended outcomes, and assessment methods of DEC in academic programmes and GE courses.
Supplementary funding support of HK$5M is available for academic units to implement the DEC-OBTL integration process. Please refer to the
President and Provost's call for DEC-OBTL proposals for details.

Prof. Joseph S. Krajcik, Michigan State University
- As City University of Hong Kong moves towards its ambitious plans to implement the Discovery Enriched Curriculum, individual instructors will need to think about how to articulate the attributes of discovery that are embedded in instructional activities and outcomes. In this workshop, we will lead participants through this process, including the identification of sources of evidence. In addition, we will guide the participants in one example of an instructional design that can promote a number of implicit DEC goals.
30 Nov 2011: Discovery learning experience at the University of Delaware
Prof. Martha Carothers , Visiting Fulbright Scholar
- Discovery learning takes place when students use their knowledge and skills acquired through traditional classroom experiences to discover, for themselves, effective actions, alternatives and solutions to situations and/or problems that occur in “real-life” contexts; that is, contexts that are unpredictable, where problems and situations are complex and lack clear definitions. Professor Carothers will share aspects of the development and implementation of the discovery learning experience in the undergraduate curriculum at the University of Delaware.

9 Nov 2011: Second DEC implementation workshop

It is envisioned that there will be General- as well as Major-specific aspects of the DEC, with measurable intended outcomes and student assessment methods. EDGE provides pedagogical support and teaching & learning activities (TLAs) suggestions based on the OBTL framework.
2 Nov 2011: First DEC implementation workshop
- Associate/Assistant Deans and representatives meet to discuss how to define the content and outcomes of the DEC in academic programmes.
Meeting results: There would be Generic-aspects and possibly Major-specific aspects of the DEC, from which faculty can produce a list of deliverables, including assessment methods. The 3 Generic-aspects are:
- the attitude to be creative and innovative;
- the ability and skill to discover and innovate;
- the accomplishment of discovery and innovation.
