1. AIM

The Course aims to provide in-service training to workshop instructors, welfare workers and other staff working in vocational rehabilitation as well as day and residential training settings such as Sheltered Workshop, Supported Employment Service, Day Activity Centre, Hostel for Moderately Mentally Handicapped Persons, Hostel for Severely Mentally Handicapped Persons, Supported Hostel, Care and Attention Home for Severely Disabled Persons, etc. to facilitate them to acquire the multi-skills and take an active role in developing the potential of people with mental handicap.

2. Objectives

The objectives of this Course are to enable students to

  1. acquire an understanding of the nature and special needs of people with mental handicap;
  2. develop a general view on the policy objective and development of rehabilitative service in Hong Kong;
  3. develop the ability to apply practical skills acquired onto their work settings;
  4. develop strategies for increasing the independence and adaptability of people with mental handicap; and
  5. urther develop collaboration skills for working with other professionals and rehabilitation workers.

3. Admission Requirement

To be eligible for admission to this Course, an applicant must either:

(a) hold HKCEE with grade E or above in five subjects including English and Chinese;

Or

be a mature applicant of at least 23 years of age by the start date of the Course.

In addition, the applicant must be:

(b) an in-service workshop instructor, welfare worker or other staff working in rehabilitation service setting serving people with mental handicap, and has not attended the following courses:

  • Specialization in Technical Subjects Instruction for the Handicapped held by Technical Teachers¡¦ Collage;
  • In-service Course for Teacher and Instructional Staff Working with the Handicapped held by Hong Kong Institute of Education;
  • In-service Course for Teaching and Instructional Staff Working with People with Disabilities held by Hong Kong Institute of Education;
  • Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation Services held by City University of Hong Kong;
  • Certificate Course in Rehabilitation Services for Welfare Workers held by the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University or City University of Hong Kong; or
  • Training Courses for Frontline Care Personnel working with Ex-mentallyIll Persons held by New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association ¡V Jockey Club New Life Institute of Psychiatric Rehabilitation.

And

(c) nominated by the head of his/her employing agency or his/her delegate.

4. Course Structure

4.1 Length of the Course
The Course will last for a total of 160 contact and directed study hours spreading over 1 year.

4.2 Mode and arrangement of the Course
The Course will be in a part-time mode and participants are required to attend the Course sessions after their normal working hours.

4.3 Teaching methods
A wide range of teaching methods, including but not confined to lectures, seminars, workshops, special topics by guest speakers, etc. will be used in the delivery of the contents of the Course.

Activity-based training methods e.g. role plays, skill demonstrations, service visits and experience sharing will be used in order to enable participants to acquire the necessary skills effectively.

4.4 Medium of instruction
Cantonese will be used as the major medium of instruction, supplemented with English.

6. Assessment and Award

6.1 A minimum of 85% completion of course hours is required.

6.2 100% coverage of practicum is required, and missing hours of practical work would have to be made up.There shall be compulsory assessment on supervised practice.

6.3 Assessment of course work may include assignments, projects, practicum, tests and examinations.The assessment criteria may vary from module to module, but the objectives of each module shall be followed.

6.4 Graduation certificates will only be awarded to course participants who satisfy the required standard in course work and supervised practice.

7. Course Fee

HK$500 is to be payable by the applicant when the application is accepted.
