Project-based Outreach Programme (POP)

Objectives

The programme is to create a learning environment outside classroom for students via some territory-wide or specific study projects to be undertaken. The objectives of Project-based Outreach Programme (POP) are to

  1. enhance secondary school students' interests and understanding in science and engineering disciplines
  2. develop in students an active learning attitude and better critical thinking skills via execution of an experimental project
  3. promote contacts between the tertiary and secondary school sectors

About the Programme

Projects for POP will be based on different subjects in science and engineering disciplines. In 2009, the project topics will be incorporated into several main themes, including Physics and Materials Science, Building and Construction, Biology and Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. Activities will be planned and co-supervised by the CityU academic staff and secondary school teachers, with CityU's senior undergraduate students acting as "student mentors". The academic staff at CityU will be the scientific adviser of the project, responsible for assessing the feasibility of the project based on the students' proposal and giving advice throughout the project operation period, such as providing input on project design, data collection and analysis as necessary. The secondary school teacher will complement the student mentor, ensuring sufficient resources are provided in the school for the project and being responsible for the safety issues both in school and of field trips (if any). The roles of the student mentors are to facilitate team work within the student group and to assist them in project execution including planning of project/field work, collection and analysis of data, discussion of results and final project documentation and presentation. An abstract of the project should be submitted in late August 2009. A final presentation will be held in September 2009 during which best presentation awards will be presented.
