What is MSDS ?

Material Safety Data Sheet or Chemical Safety Data Sheet

It provides safety related information on that chemical.

A MSDS usually contains

ChemicalIdentification :

- Common name, Synonyms

- Chemical number (CAS #, NIOSH #, HAZCHEM Code)

- Classification (Risk symbols, risk & safety phrase)

- Chemical family, formula

Physical Properties :

- Odour & Appearance

- Melting/Boiling/Flash point

- Density, pH

Uses :

Health Hazard

- Exposure Limits

- Instant & Chronic Exposure Hazard (Inhalation, Ingestion, Skin & Eye contact)

Safety Precautions :

- Facility requirement

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required

- Storage & Handling precaution

- Stability & Incompatibility

2.1) Dangerous Goods (DG) Store


What are Dangerous Goods ?

Dangerous Goods Ordinance Cap. 295 lists out what are Dangerous Goods "Which means that with the exception of explosives (Cat. 1) which can only be manufactured or stored as required by the Commissioner of Mines, these goods can only be manufactured, used and/or stored in excess of the exempted quantity in accommodation approved and licensed by the Director of Fire Services.

Categories

In the Dangerous Goods (Classification) Regulations dangerous goods are listed into the following categories:

Category 1: Explosives. (The Authority is the Commissioner of Mines. No further reference to Cat. I is made in this pamphlet.)
Category 2: Compressed Gases.Cl. 1. Permanent Gases
Cl. 2. Liquefied Gases
Cl. 3. Dissolved Gases
Category 3: Corrosive Substances.
Category 4: Poisonous Substances.Cl. 1. Substances giving off poisonous gas or vapour.
Cl. 2. Certain other poisonous substances.
Category 5: Substances giving off
Category 5: Imflammable vapour
Cl. 1 flash point below 23oC inflammable vapours.
Cl. 2 flash point of or exceeding 23oC but not exceeding 66oC
Cl. 3 flash point of or exceeding 66oC
(applicable to diesel oils, furnace oils and other fuel oils only)
Div. 1 immiscible with water.(applicable to Class 1 & 2 only)
Div. 2 miscible with water. (applicable to Class 1 & 2 only)
Category 6: Substances which become dangerous by interaction with water.
Category 7: Strong supporters of combustion.
Category 8: Readily combustible substances.
Category 9: Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Category 9A: Combustible goods exempted from Section 6 to 11 of the Ordinance.
Category 10: Other dangerous substances.
