CityU Proxy Server

Our Proxy

A central Proxy Server (proxy.cityu.edu.hk) has been formally set up on our network in order to speed up our Internet access.

Proxy server works like disk cache to the whole network. It is used for caching frequently-accessed data from outside CityU. When you try to get those data (e.g. a Webpage) that already cached, the data will be sent to you from the proxy server directly instead of transferred again from the remote sites. This not only shortens your access time, but also reduces the Internet traffic and saves our network resources.

For the proxy server to function, necessary re-configuration has been made to the browser software invoked from the CityU Network Menu in the Windows 95 and Chinese Windows 95 environment. Except for them, all other browsers, such as those invoked in the Departmental Windows 3.1/Chinese Windows 3.1, those running on SUN Unix workstations and those installed locally (eg. the one on your home PC) etc., need to be re-configured by following the procedures described below.

How should I configure my browser?
